Where do I get an AA Smartfuel card?

AA Smartfuel cards are free and can be picked up from any participating retailer, service provider, service station or AA Centre. If you are already an AA Member, you don’t need an AA Smartfuel card – just use your AA Membership card.

How do I register my AA Smartfuel card?

There are three ways to register your card:

What if I lose or damage my AA Smartfuel card?

Log into your account and click 'Your AA Smartfuel Account'.  Select ‘Deactivate your card/s’.  Alternatively you can call us at 0800 842 877.

This deactivates the card so that it cannot be used to redeem your AA Smartfuel discounts. If these have been redeemed before you are able to deactivate your card, those discounts will be lost.

To transfer your balance to a new card, simply pick up a FREE card at any participating retailer or service provider. You will need to attach your new card as an additional card under your AA Smartfuel Account.

What if I lose or damage my AA Membership card?

If your AA Membership card has been lost, stolen, damaged or is not swiping you can order a replacement here or log in to MyAA.

Alternatively, you can send us an email, call us toll free on 0800 500 444 Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm or visit your nearest AA Centre.

How do I redeem my AA Smartfuel discounts?

Swipe your AA Smartfuel or AA Membership card at any participating service station when you go to purchase fuel, and request to redeem your discounts. This will provide the service station with your accumulated discounts, which will then be deducted from each litre of fuel you purchase (up to 50 litres).

Are all my accumulated AA Smartfuel discounts cleared when I redeem my fuel discounts?

Yes - every time you redeem at the service station your accumulated AA Smartfuel discounts are cleared and your card has a zero balance. This will include any discount you may qualify for at the time of transaction.

Do my AA Smartfuel discounts expire?

Yes. AA Smartfuel discounts can be used up until the end of the calendar month following the month in which they were earned e.g. a fuel discount dated 1 through 30 April will expire on 31 May. This means you have between one and two months to use your discounts.

What is the maximum amount of fuel I can redeem my fuel discounts for?

AA Smartfuel discounts apply up to a maximum of 50 litres. If you buy more than 50 litres, the discount will be applied to the first 50 litres and any fuel purchased above this amount will be charged at the full pump price.

Is there a limit to the discounts I can accumulate?

No. However, if you accumulate more fuel discounts than the pump price per litre you will lose the over-accumulated amount as your balance is cleared to zero every time you redeem. For example, if you accumulate a $2.20 per litre fuel discount but only pay $2.00 per litre at the service station, the extra 20 cents per litre discount will also be cleared from your card.

Can I use my AA Smartfuel discounts on all types of fuel?

GAS: You can redeem your AA Smartfuel discounts for petrol and diesel fuel purchases from the pump at participating service stations.

bp: You can redeem your AA Smartfuel discounts for petrol, diesel and LPG fuel purchases from the pump at participating stations. You cannot redeem discounts on LPG bottles.

How can I view my AA Smartfuel account balance?

There are three ways to check your balance:

  • Download the app on the App Store (for iOS) or Google Play (for Android)

  • Log in and click 'Your AA Smartfuel Account'

  • Check your receipt when you swipe your card at a participating retailer or service provider. In most cases this will show both your discounts earned for that purchase and your total account balance. To find out more about specific participating retailers see our Where to shop page.

How do I attach additional AA Smartfuel cards to my account?

Log into your existing account and click 'Your AA Smartfuel Account'. Select ‘Attach multiple cards to your account’. This is where you enter the 16 digit number and the 4 digit pin on the back of your new AA Smartfuel card.

Please note that you can only do this for an unregistered card.

How do I join or create a group with other cardholders?

To create a group with other cardholders - login to your account, click ‘Link another cardholder to your account group’ and follow the steps.

You can only be in one group at any time - if you'd like to join a group created by another cardholder, you'll need to ask them to submit an invite request for you to join the group.

Remember that all fuel discounts earned by cardholders in the group go into a joint account and anyone in the group can redeem them. Once a cardholder has redeemed the fuel discounts the account is cleared to zero.

Can supermarket fuel dockets be redeemed along with AA Smartfuel discounts?

Not at present. Supermarket fuel docket programmes operate differently to AA Smartfuel and at this stage both BP and GAS have said they will not be accepted for redemption in conjunction with AA Smartfuel.

What happens to my AA Smartfuel Account if my AA Membership has lapsed?

You will no longer have the benefits of your AA Membership; however you can continue to use your AA Membership card to accumulate and redeem AA Smartfuel discounts.

If you wish to reinstate your AA Membership and be entitled to additional AA Member benefits, please call 0800 500 444 at any time Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm or visit your nearest AA Centre.

How do I contact AA Smartfuel for more information and help with my account?

Call 0800 842 877. Operating hours are Monday to Friday 8:30am - 5pm, Sat, Sun and Public Holidays 9am - 5:30pm.

If you are calling to link cards, it will be handy to have both cardholders present so that the cards can be linked immediately.

What should I do if I forget to swipe my card to earn an AA Smartfuel discount?

If you have a GST receipt that clearly shows a qualifying purchase at a participating AA Smartfuel retail partner, send us a scanned copy to contact@AAsmartfuel.co.nz or fax (09) 486 3086 with your name, contact details and card number. In most cases, we can manually load your discount for the same date as shown on the receipt.

Please be aware that some retailers do require your card to be presented in-store at time of purchase.

Converting discounts

If I am part of a group, will the total balance be available to turn into another reward?

If you belong to a group where you earn AA Smartfuel discounts collectively then yes, when you or someone in your group chooses to turn AA Smartfuel discounts in to a new reward then you will have the option to convert from the group's total balance.

I don't have the AA Smartfuel app, how else can I convert my AA Smartfuel discounts?

You have the option of calling our call centre on 0800 842 877. The easiest way to turn your AA Smartfuel discounts into other rewards is through the AA Smartfuel app.

Once I turn my AA Smartfuel discounts into a different reward, is it possible to reverse this or change it to something else?

No unfortunately once you have turned your AA Smartfuel discounts into a different reward it cannot be reversed or changed. The new reward terms and conditions will now apply.

If I choose to turn my AA Smartfuel discounts into another reward, will the same expiry period apply or will this change?

Once your AA Smartfuel discounts are converted to a Non-Fuel Redemption Partner their terms of use, expiry and redemption conditions apply.

Does this mean I can now earn new rewards (e.g. Qantas Points) at AA Smartfuel partners?

No. You still earn AA Smartfuel discounts at all of our partners as you have always done, but you can now choose to turn these AA Smartfuel discounts into new rewards, such as Qantas Points, by using the AA Smartfuel App, or calling the AA Smartfuel Call Center on 0800 842 877

I've accidentally set an Automatic Reward and I had a large balance, can I get back the AA Smartfuel discounts that were converted?

No, these cannot be reversed, as they now sit in the other reward partners’ environment and their terms and conditions now apply to that reward.

How does this affect AA Smartfuel discounts at bp and GAS?

There is no change to the Service stations. You can still accumulate and redeem fuel discounts at participating service stations, like you've always been able to do.

Do I get both the AA Smartfuel fuel discounts and the new reward (e.g. Qantas Points) or just one or the other?

You can choose to turn some of your earned AA Smartfuel discounts into a One-off Reward and use the remaining AA Smartfuel discounts on a fuel redemption.

If you have set an Automatic Reward then no, your AA Smartfuel discounts will automatically turn into your chosen reward immediately, and cannot be used on a fuel redemption. To make sure your AA Smartfuel discount is converted when shopping at bp or GAS you must choose to accumulate your discount / save it for later. Check with the attendant that your discount is not being used instantly on your fuel purchase.

Can I attach multiple CarbonClick accounts to my AA Smartfuel account?

No, you can only link one CarbonClick account to your AA Smartfuel account.

Can I attach multiple Qantas Frequent Flyer accounts to my AA Smartfuel account?

No, you can only link one Qantas Frequent Flyer account to your AA Smartfuel account.

What happens if I choose to redeem instantly when transacting at bp or GAS but, I have an Automatic Reward set?

Choosing to redeem your AA Smartfuel discount instantly when shopping at bp or GAS will mean that your discount will apply to your fuel purchase and not be converted into your chosen Automatic Reward. 

To make sure your AA Smartfuel discount is converted when shopping at bp or GAS you must choose to accumulate your discount / save it for later. Check with the attendant that your discount is not being used instantly on your fuel purchase.

Deleting my AA Smartfuel account

How do I request to delete my AA Smartfuel account?

Email your request along with your name and AA Smartfuel card number to contact@aasmartfuel.co.nz.

Once confirmed, your account is entirely and irreversibly deleted from the AA Smartfuel programme and database. You also agree to assume sole responsibility for all consequences relating to the deletion of your account.

What data is deleted when my account is deleted?

All of your account details, including the personal information you have provided, will be entirely and irreversibly deleted from the AA Smartfuel programme and the AA Smartfuel database.

Transactional information may be kept for up to 10 years for auditing purposes however, your personal details will be removed and disassociated from those transactions.

How long does it take to delete my AA Smartfuel account?

After your request has been received, your AA Smartfuel account will be deleted within 10 business days.

You will be notified upon completion.

What happens to my AA Membership if I delete my AA Smartfuel account?

If you're an AA Member, your AA Membership will remain active under the AA Membership terms and conditions. For more information about your AA Membership account, please contact AA Membership directly.
